European Eel Slithers Closer To Extinction!

The european eel is a species of eel which is a snake- like body. They can reach size of 4 ft 11 inches in rare cases but usually are 60-80 cm. They are critically endangered, meaning that there are close to none left. Their population is dying because of special threats like, oil drilling domestic and urban waste water. These animals live all across Europe in countries like France and England. These eels usually live in wetlands and marine intertidal zones (area near the shore that has plants in it). They eat insect larvae and worms form the area. Some conservation actions we should take are that we should stop dumping so much waste into the ocean because since they are close to the shore so are the disposal areas. I think that the disposal areas should be more out front so the waste falls to the bottom of the ocean.more threats are residential areas so like housing near the wetlands or on them. Also airborne pollutants like carbon monoxide from vehicles or factories.

The last measure on their population was in 2013 and their species was still dying off. Maybe the can start to find mating locations so their population can start rising. Their lifespan is usually 80 years but there has been one study that says european eels can live up to 150 years. Most of the European eels history has been very new because fishermen never liked to fish them and study them. Also there are stories that state that people thought that they were like dragons of the sea. They killing rate of these fish are from 1960 to 2010 over 30,000 have been killed due to humans. The overfishing that people are doing is that they are killing them off without of them to stabilize their population
