Siau Island Tarsier

The Siau Island Tarsiers live in Indonesia. These cute animals can be found in the forest and in shrub areas on a small volcanic island. It is hard to find evidence if they live in social groups because their numbers are so few. They are carnivores, more specifically they eat insects, lizards, and birds. The Siau Island Tarsier is on the critically endangered list. Some of the Siau Island Tarsier threats are agriculture, biological resource use, and geological events. The reasons for these threats are volcanoes, hunting and trapping, logging and wood harvesting. One of the most common and deadly threats are humans. The locals are destroying the tarsier’s habitat for their own use. Another occurring threat towards the Siau Island Tarsier are humans eating them for a snack. This happens when locals are out hunting.

There are reports that the local human population regularly eats tarsiers, up to 5-10 animals at a sitting. Right now there is no conservation actions going on to protect Siau Island Tarsier from becoming extinct. This is probably why the Siau Island Tarsier are decreasing in number and why the locals have not stopped. Some conservation actions we need to take to protect the Siau Island Tarsier are site/area protection, resource and habitat protection, and species management. This can be done by helping to protect their land by limiting the cutting down of the forests. We can also help the Siau Island Tarsier by blocking off sections of where they live, so that humans do not interfere with them. Another way of stopping the locals from demolishing the tarsiers are banning them from eating and killing them, if they do they will be fined. With their environment protected we can begin to keep count of how many of Tarsiers are left and help their population increase.
